La investigació s’ha realitzat institucionalment en el marc del departament de Geografia de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Bellaterra) i ha comptat amb el suport econòmic de la Fundació Volkwagen.
Recerca portada a terme entre els anys 1985-1986. El treball de referència s’inscriu en el marc d’un projecte d’investigació més extens iniciat als anys 1982, sobre el tema general dels desplaçaments de població a l’àrea metropolitana de Barcelona.
L’interès més específic era l’apropament a l’estudi dels desplaçaments qualificats com a moviment de retorn
